Book Review: The Rumor

book review: the rumor

This is one of the books from my Summer Reads 2015 (post here). I was rather looking forward to reading this one - rumors and scandal in Nantucket who doesn't look that during the summer months?

The Rumor

Madeline King and Grace Pancik are best friends and the envy of Nantucket for their perfect marriages, perfect kids and their Sunday night double dates with their devoted husbands. But this summer somethings changed and if there's nothing Nantucket likes more then it's cocktails on the beach at sunset, it's a good rumor...
And rumor has it...
...that Madeline a novelist, has writers block, with a deadline looming, bills piling up and blank pages driving her to desperation - and a desperately bad decision.
...that Grace, hard at work transforming her backyard into a garden paradise, has been collaborating a bit more closely than necessary with her ruggedly handsome landscape architect.
...that Grace's husband, successful island real estate developer "Fast Eddie" Pancik, has embarked on a rather unusual side project.
...that the storybook romance between Madeline's son Brick, and Grace's daughter Allegra, is on the rocks, heading for disaster.
As the gossip escalates, and they face the possible loss of the happy lives they've worked so hard to create, Grace and Madeline try mightily to set the record straight - but the truth might be even worse than the rumor has it.

The Rumor Elin Hilderbrand

My Thoughts!

This is the perfect book to read over the summer months, I couldn't put it down and finished it within a couple of days.
The writing is fantastic and scenes are set perfectly, you find yourself liking all the characters and really wanting to know what happens to them next or what they are going to do about certain situations.
It's a nice easy read that really does pull you in very quickly. I loved the way the story was written from many different perspectives but it flows really well.
As you can imagine from the title it is about rumors and how they get about and can have very negative effects on people but I liked the fact that it wasn't just about rumors there are little small story lines in there that have nothing to do with rumors. It is one of them small town and too many people with nothing to do books which we can all resonate with on some level, whether it's happened to us, we know someone who it's happened to or we know someone who is the gossiper. We can all relate on some level.
Financial troubles, supposed affairs, teenage angst and shady deals on the side really do kick the rumors off and this really is the ideal summer book.

I do want to point out that Elin Hilderbrand actually wrote this whilst battling breast cancer. I can not imagine having to deal with that but the fact she wrote a book whilst dealing with it, is absolutely incredible to me, Elin deserves credit just for that alone. I wish her the best of luck in the future.

Have you read this book yet, if so what were your thoughts?
